A treasure in the heart of Huntington. Built by August Heckscher in 1920 to house his eclectic private collection, the Heckscher Museum has grown to include more than 1,800 paintings, sculpture and works on paper spanning about 500 years of European and American art, from Renaissance masters to the most recent contemporary artists. Particularly noted for its 19th and early 20th-century landscape collection especially the Hudson River and Long Island landscape schools - the Heckscher is also becoming known as a center for important studies in early modernism. The museum also features many special and traveling exhibitions.
