Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall to Visit Huntington Public can see Dignity Memorial Wall at Peter Nelson Park Oct. 1-3 Huntington Station, NY – Councilman Mark Cuthbertson, together with Supervisor Frank P. Petrone, Rep. Steve Israel and Town Board members, announced that the Dignity Memorial Wall – the traveling Vietnam War Memorial – will stop at the Town’s Peter Nelson Park (aka Oakwood Park) in late September for a week of commemorative events. The Wall, a three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. -- has been touring the nation since 1990. This 240-foot long, eight-foot high, faux-granite replica contains the names of more than 58,000 Americans who died or are missing in Vietnam. To see the memorial, to touch it and experience its magnitude offers unforgettable moments of reflection and healing to thousands of visitors. “Honoring our veterans, thanking them for their sacrifices and for protecting and preserving our freedoms is something that each American should be extremely mindful of,” stated Councilman Mark Cuthbertson. “During the first weekend of October, residents in the Town of Huntington and surrounding communities will be able to do just that by paying their respects to the men and woman in the military who sacrificed their lives for ours in the name of freedom,” added Cuthbertson. “For more than a quarter century, this memorial has been touching the hearts of Americans and reminding us never to forget those who paid the ultimate price on behalf of our country,” Supervisor Petrone said. “Huntington, with its longstanding commitment to support veterans and their needs, is proud to be hosting the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall at one of our Town parks.” “I am grateful to Councilman Mark Cuthbertson and the Town of Huntington for this effort in bringing this memorial to Huntington,” said Rep. Steve Israel. "Someone famously said that dying for freedom isn’t the worst thing that can happen, but being forgotten is. The Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall will ensure that those who died are remembered." The exhibit is scheduled to arrive at Peter Nelson Park on Tuesday, September 28 with a motorycycle brigade escort. The Wall will be open to the public from Friday, October 1st through Sunday, October 3rd –24 hours a day. “We are proud to partner with Councilman Mark Cuthbertson and the Town of Huntington in bringing the Dignity Memorial ® Vietnam Wall to the people of Huntington,” stated Charles Spencer of the Dignity Memorial® Vietnam Wall. “It is our way to help people pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in Vietnam, honor all of our Veterans and teach schoolchildren all about the history of the Vietnam War.” The Town announced the Wall’s arrival at a news conference on July 19 hosted by Councilman Cuthbertson. The Town is seeking volunteers to assist with tasks including setup, hospitality, security and dismantling. The Town is also seeking sponsors who can help defray some of the costs of bringing the Wall to Huntington. Interested persons should contact Stephen Jimenez at 631-351-3171.

An Air Quality Action Day for Thursday, September 2nd The New York State Department of Transportation has declared that tomorrow (Thursday, September 2, 2010) will be an Air Quality Action Day in the downstate metro area due to forecasted high levels of ground-level ozone. While tomorrow will still be a day when people can go about most of their normal activities, such as going to work, driving may be one of the most polluting activities that people do tomorrow, and we encourage everyone to leave their cars at home if possible.

GLUCK SISTERS BIRTHDAY BLOOD DRIVE Melville, NY Monday August 30, 2010 The Gluck Sisters: Muriel, Jude and Doreen, are hosting their first ‘Birthday Blood Drive’ at the Long Island Blood Services Melville Donor Center located at 905 Walt Whitman Road (aka Route 110), Melville NY. Muriel, a four year Breast Cancer Survivor was shocked to learn that nationally only 3% of the eligible population [see attached notes] donates on a regular basis. An amazing 1/3 of us will NEED blood before the age of 72. Reacting to this news, the sisters decided to host their own blood drive to help increase awareness and hopefully donations. On average approximately 2000 units of blood are needed daily in the area serviced by New York Blood Center. Sadly, because the number of donations does not meet the need, 20% of the products {red blood cells, plasma and platelets} needed comes from other regions of the U.S.
