MAYOKA’S RESPONSE TO COMMUNITY’S REQUEST TO SPONSOR RESOLUTION FOR TERM LIMITS Community members at the July 6, 2010 Huntington Town Board Meeting formally requested Councilman Mark Mayoka to sponsor a resolution for Term Limits for the elected members of the Huntington Town Council at the next Town Board Meeting on August 3, 2010. Mayoka has addressed the concerns of the community by personally sponsoring a resolution to schedule a public hearing to consider the adoption of local law to prohibit an elected Town Board Member from serving more than two consecutive terms of four years of office in the same elective office. Councilman Mayoka believes that term limits are a tool, which may be used to make elected Town Council positions more responsive to public needs through a continuous process of renewal and by encouraging more residents to compete in elections. “In providing a limited time of two consecutive terms of four years each, totaling eight years, we set a standard of accountability for elected Council Members to set goals and fulfill agendas and to attain their promises.” Councilman Mayoka will present and sponsor this resolution at the next August 3, 2010 Town Board Meeting but asks the community to provide the Town of Huntington with their own request by completing and filling out the survey, which is also available online at the Town of Huntington website. SURVEY Please complete and return the completed survey by fax (631) 351-3326 or email mmayoka@town.huntington.ny.us.

MAYOKA’S RESPONSE TO BOARD OF EDUCATION DECISION ON JACK ABRAMS “I cannot believe that the School Board failed to provide a public comment period for both sides before making their unilateral decision. It almost appears to be a violation of Free Speech under the First Amendment of the Constitution. Furthermore, I have had no discussion with any members of the Huntington School Board regarding the closing of Jack Abrams. I am disappointed that I was not consulted in this important decision making process. My main concern has always been for the health and safety of the children attending Jack Abrams. In this regard, I will do all that is in my power as a Huntington Town Councilman to reduce the level of crime in the area. I have spoken to County Executive Steve Levy and he has confirmed with me that this is a major priority on his agenda. I look forward to being a liaison between the Suffolk County PD, the Town Department of Public Safety, and the community at large in executing a Crime Crisis Mapping solution.”

Deadline Extended on Transit Oriented Development District Town now has until Sept. 21 to act on proposal The Huntington Town Board, at its July 6 meeting, voted to extend until Sept. 21 the deadline for acting on the proposal to create the Huntington Station Transit Oriented Development district and on an application by Avalon Bay Communities for a rezoning that would allow construction of a 490-unit development on a 26.6-acre site in the district. This is the second extension of the time in which to act, following a March 9 public hearing on the proposal. At its May 17 meeting, the Board voted to extend the deadline to Sept. 5 so it could fully review the comments at the public hearing and changes Avalon Bay has made from its original proposal. The vote on the most recent extension was 3-2, with Council Members Susan Berland (the sponsor), Mark Cuthbertson and Mark Mayoka voting in favor. Supervisor Frank Petrone and Councilwoman Glenda Jackson opposed the measure, with both calling any effort to further extend the deadline premature.

Puppy Tales John Carillo, Huntington Station
One of my mine and my wife’s greatest joys is our dogs Jockamo and Hansel. We love going on walks, watching them play and all of their crazy antics and sometimes just snuggling up. My wife though sorely misses our large shepherd mix that passed away last November. He was beautiful and the type of dog you just felt safe with. All of our dogs have been rescued mutts but this time my wife wanted something more specific, a large shepherd or shepherd mix puppy. So she started watching Craigslist and local classifieds. Her assumption was that any of the litters of puppies posted would be from locals and that they would know the parents so we would be better able to predict the size and get the large dog we wanted. After a long time of watching, finally on June 18th, there it was – “German Shepherd puppies, vet checked, shots up to date and with papers”. I called at once and thus met Richard Goldstein.
